GOOD TO KNOW

The islands are North and South Koster and they can be reached by boat from Strömstad. They are located in the middle of Sweden’s only marine national park, Kosterhavet, a 400-square-kilometer area with a unique marine and archipelago environment. Here, you will find answers to the most common questions and learn what others often ask about their visit to the Koster Islands.

How do I get to the Koster Islands?
The Koster boat departs from Ångbåtskajen, the Northern harbor, in central Strömstad every day of the year. Ångbåtskajen is the street that runs along the restaurants and Strömstad information center.
There are several docking piers on the Koster Islands, and you can disembark at one pier and return from another.
Dogs are allowed on the boat free of charge, and there is a dedicated area on the upper deck.
Bikes and kayaks can be brought along depending on available space, and an additional fee is charged, payable on board.

Visit www.kostermarin.se for timetables and prices.

Ticket purchase
Tickets cannot be pre-booked and are bought at the payment machine at the quay in Strömstad (card only) or via the Västtrafik To Go app. Västtrafik account credits and period tickets (30 days or longer) that are valid in zone C can be used for the trip.

I have a Senior Ticket valid in zone C, can I use it on the Koster boats?
No, unfortunately, those tickets are not valid on board at the moment. Stay updated on Västtrafik’s website for any changes.

Where can I park if I’m going to the Koster Islands?
There are several parking options depending on how long you plan to stay. Learn more about suitable parking here.

What is the opening situation on the Koster Islands?
From late autumn until Easter, service on the islands is limited, so if you are planning a trip, it’s a good idea to bring your own snacks. See Open on Koster.

What can I do on the Koster Islands?
The islands are a paradise for those looking for beautiful nature and outdoor activities, or if you just want to enjoy the salty sea experiences. The range of activities is both broad and varied. Cycle, hike, kayak, fish, snorkel, or join a guided tour on land and at sea.

More information on what to see and do.

What should I not miss when visiting the Koster Islands?
The Koster Islands can be visited all year round. While the islands are a popular destination in the summer, autumn, winter, and spring offer beautiful walks, and you’ll have the nature almost to yourself.

What is Naturum Kosterhavet?
A visitor center at Ekenäs pier with exhibitions, touch tanks, the possibility to watch films, and meet knowledgeable staff. Here, you can learn about the Kosterhavet National Park, and during the summer, activities are arranged for all ages.

Visiting both North- and South Koster?
During the summer months, you can travel between Nord- and Sydkoster with the cable ferry Kosterlänken.
At other times of the year, you can travel across the sound with Kosterbåten; see schedules for Västra Bryggan to Långegärde.

Where can I rent a bike?
Bikes can be rented at the docking piers on Sydkoster: Ekenäs pier and Långegärde pier.
You can rent bikes at the Koster boat docking piers at Ekenäs and return them at our rental station in Långegärde, or vice versa.
Bikes can only be pre-booked for groups of 15 or more. The rental is open during the mainland season.

Can I cycle on Nordkoster?
If you have your own bike, it’s fine to cycle on the roads, but not on the trails. The distances on Nordkoster are quite short, so a tip is to explore the island on foot. The paved roads on the map, which you can download above, are allowed for cycling.

Can I book accommodation on the Koster Islands?
Yes, there are several accommodations available for rent on Koster. Read more here.
Remember to book well in advance.

Is camping and making fires allowed on the islands?
No, the Koster Islands are largely nature reserves, and there are specific rules to follow. Camping is only allowed at the Lyths campground on Nordkoster.
If you have your own boat, kayak, or SUP, you are welcome to travel to the small islands around Kosterhavet National Park to camp there. However, Allemansrätten (the right of public access) and special regulations for the national park apply on some islands. Read more about this on the official national park website.

Making fires is allowed only at designated spots with firewood that you bring yourself. Be sure to check if a fire ban is in place!

Where can I store my luggage in Strömstad while I wait for the ferry or train home?
During certain times, there is an option to store your bags at Valvet’s tailoring and shoemaking service, located right next to the harbor.

Are the Koster Islands part of the Kosterhavet National Park?
It’s easy to think that Nord- and Sydkoster are part of the national park, but that’s not actually the case. Large parts of the islands are nature reserves, but a small part of Sydkoster is included in the Kosterhavet National Park, which otherwise includes the surrounding waters and smaller islands. Looking at the map, you’ll see that the boundary is just outside the islands. However, the islands are located right in the middle of the national park and are a perfect starting point for exploring Kosterhavet, especially the Naturum at Ekenäs. Nord- and Sydkoster are nature reserves with great biodiversity and stunning nature, and there are therefore special rules regarding camping.

Can I fish in the sea as a private individual?
Yes, fishing in the sea is allowed.

Read more about the rules for recreational fishing in Västerhavet.
